Solomon Passy might appear as the ex-machina deus for the position of NATO Secretary General

19.03.2009

Solomon Passy might appear as the ex-machina deus for the position of NATO Secretary General - this is written in the 825th edition of the European weekly New Europe. In an article named War Games Wanted Leaders for EU and NATO the newspaper points the possible candidates for the position - the Prime Minister of Denmark Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Polish Defense Minister Radek Sikorski and the Chairman of the Bulgarian Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee Solomon Passy. Also the media shares that the President of the European Commission Jose Barroso is interested in the position.

„Anders Fogh Rasmussen is at this moment the top candidate for the post of Secretary General of NATO. The appointment of Rasmussen , however, may face a Turkish veto for two good reasons ...- the crises in the relations of Denmark and the Muslim world generated by the publication in Danish media of the Mohamed insulting cartoons ... and the open support provided by the government to PKK the Kurdish political organization which in Turkey is banned because of its terrorist activities."

„Another candidate is the Polish Defense Minister Radek Sikorski. Under the new understanding of the "re-setting" of the USA relations with Russia, there are reservations on the part of Washington based on the consideration that a Polish appointment in the supreme political position in NATO might irritate Russia and generate unwanted tensions."

„Last but not least is Solomon Passy, a leading political figure in Bulgaria, who is very efficient and result-oriented. Considering the circumstances, Passy might appear as the ex-machina deus in the case of failure of the powers to agree on a popularly regarded favourite."

These are the comments on the three candidates from Denmark, Poland and Bulgaria, made in the article.
